Maritime and Trade
Tirthani Legal is a boutique firm focused on maritime and trade.
The firm was founded by Mr Sukumar Tirthani, a graduate of Gujarat National Law University and a member of the Bar since 2016. He holds an LL.M. in International Commercial and Maritime Law from Swansea University, United Kingdom.
Before establishing the firm, Mr Tirthani worked with leading commercial practitioners and a specialist maritime law firm, and subsequently gained in-house experience with a major liner operator. Drawing on experience gained both in private practice and within the industry, Tirthani Legal advises clubs, shipowners, charterers, traders and agents across a broad range of shipping and commercial matters, both contentious and non-contentious.
Tirthani Legal acts in admiralty and commercial matters, including vessel arrests, cargo claims, charterparty disputes and related court and arbitral proceedings. It also represents clients in commercial litigation concerning contractual disputes, debt recovery and claims for damages. In addition to its regular appearances before the Gujarat High Court and commercial courts across the state, the firm acts in proceedings before courts and tribunals across India.
Working with a focused client base, the firm places emphasis on careful case management and commercially practical dispute resolution. Its base in Gujarat, close to the state’s ports and trading centres, has given the firm particular depth in shipping, commodities and international trade matters.
Tirthani Legal has a particular focus on ship sale and purchase work, alongside advisory on charterparties, offshore contracts, ship finance, and commercial contracts more generally.
